The Highest-Nitrogen Solid Fertilizer Available
Urea 46% Nitrogen
Urea (46-0-0) is the most concentrated solid nitrogen fertilizer available, containing 46% nitrogen. It is the most widely used nitrogen fertilizer in the world due to its high nutrient content, ease of handling, and cost-effectiveness per unit of nitrogen.
When applied to the soil, urea is converted to ammonium by soil bacteria (urease enzyme), and then to nitrate through nitrification. This process makes nitrogen available to plants in both forms. Urea is suitable for a wide range of crops and application methods.
To minimise nitrogen losses through volatilisation, urea should be incorporated into the soil or applied before rainfall. It is widely used for top-dressing cereals, maize, and pastures, and is also suitable for foliar application at low concentrations.
